Sorry I completely missed this during the jam.

Pretty solid platformer! Creating platforms where you died is an interesting spin on it. It could get pretty precise and tricky at times.

I admit, I kinda cheesed the "Rage Bait" level, by creating a staircase.

Oh dayum

So yeah, this is really good! The audio and visuals are appealing, and the puzzles are pretty well-thought-out.

Maybe this is a just personal thing, (and I understand this would've been WAY out of scope for the jam,) but I wonder if this kind of gameplay could benefit from a non-linear level design. I could picture things like airdashing and hookshotting being fun to do, without having to worry about following a specific path, or set of actions.

IDK, I guess I'm just spitballing.

Either way, you've got a really solid platformer, with some unique mechanics. Good job!

Yeah, I guess that's always unfortunate. I nearly didn't submit mine, and almost gave up. There are probably many more people who weren't as lucky.

I'm guessing they would've moved on, and might be getting ready for another jam. Or moving on to another project.

That was pretty good! Very unique mechanics. I do like that the story is pretty abstract and open to interpretation. Escaping the well felt satisfying.

The climbing controls took a bit of getting used to, and I think I would've preferred if each climbing "stride" had a bit more distance. The way it is kinda gives the feeling our character's hands are inching bit by bit, instead of climbing to the next bar.

But yeah, good work!

Alright, here's my entry.

My game is Scavengers of Deadwood Pines. Check it out.
Check it out if you like good art, a mix of cozy and creepy atmosphere, spooky monsters, and campfires.

Interesting idea. I kinda messed up on my playthrough, since I disposed of the wrong bodies in the wrong order, and ended up pissing off the eldritch deity.

I'm probably a bit late, so I wouldn't blame you if you didn't get to mine.
But I suppose "you miss all the shots you don't take":

"it was so exciting to die"

But yeah, thanks!
Adding action/adventure controls and shooting mechanics was a bit of a personal experiment. I wanted to see if I could make a horror game still be scary with smooth controls.
IMO it creates a bit more of a synergy between the player and the character, but that's just me.

Thanks!

One trick I did to make the models was that they all use the same diffuse texture, which is just a palette. And there's only three materials in the game. (World, characters, and glowing effects.) So I didn't need to set up new materials every time I imported a model.
I also didn't need to do much texturing and rigging. Character models are segmented into parts, and the textures are just colored faces on each part. I was basically drawing with polygons. And segmenting the limbs made rigging really quick.

But yeah, you're probably right. The upgrade system was kinda tacked on during the final day, since my original theme tie-in idea had to be cut. So maybe having a consequence for upgrading could make things more interesting. (Kinda like Darkwood?)

And like you said, maybe a more obvious sound or music cue for morning approaching could be better. The fade to white is still a bit too abrupt. Also, I wanted to make an animation for the fire slowly dying, or better audio/visual feedback when you add wood to it.

The most important change I'd need to make would be to make the nights last longer, and maybe find the right balance for how much time wood gives you, and how fast the campfire burns out.

But yeah, thanks for taking the time to play this, and giving your thoughts on it! Glad you enjoyed it.

Pretty solid game! The puzzles were challenging well designed, but never felt frustrating. And it's cool you added a secondary challenge to each level.

There were a couple bugs, such as the switch noise playing every frame if you stand on a switch with a switch with a teddy bear on it.

But yeah, well done!

Alright, I'll check out your game right now.

Anyway, my game is Scavengers of Deadwood Pines.

Damn, 100+ games? Good luck with that.

I have an idea:

The way you check the time is by pressing a button that brings up your phone.

But you look at it in first person.

This looks like it has potential. Sorry to hear you weren't able to finish it.
It has some good ideas, and it has an appealing art style. The thrall mechanic could make for interesting combat.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!

I've considered having a time of day indicator, but I figured it would be spookier if it's left ambiguous. So when the sun rises, the player thinks "Oh thank god, it's morning!"

Although I suppose in this day and age, everyone has a phone to tell the time. So maybe I might as well add something.

The gameplay loop actually pretty good. Also didn't expect there to be voice acting.

I think Norman is a pretty cool guy.
He jumps on fans and isn't afraid of anything.

Alright, I guess brutally honest could be a different change of pace.

I'll also have to check your game out. The visuals kinda remind me of Momodora.

Thanks!

Yeah, early on I wanted to add a dodge button, or something. But I guess running away will have to suffice.

Alright, shameless plug:

This one isn't mine, but Carry On Knight only has 4 votes. I think it deserves more attention:

Also, I forget if you've already played my game. But here it is just in case:
https://itch.io/jam/jamsepticeye/rate/3937524
It has 21 votes though, so it's not really that small anymore.

Yeah, I saw the tail end of your stream, when you played the tree one.

Take care! Hope your trip goes well.

Just replayed it after I found out a fixed version had been uploaded.

Very ominous atmosphere. I liked the character art. The four-directional flashlight could be a bit weird to angle at times, but good work overall.

It was definitely challenging.

It's shilling time!
https://itch.io/jam/jamsepticeye/rate/393752

It should take about 5-8 minutes to beat.

i cant believe how ungrateful that baker was for sleeping on timmy's magic trick.

I thought it was pretty funny. It reminded me of those old Flash adventure games.

Pretty neat idea for a Halloween game. I wouldn't mind seeing a longer version.

Good work!

That was really good! I don't think I've seen any turn-based battle systems like this before. I liked the art, and the gameplay was really engaging.

Great job!

i cant believe you totally ripped off my game, man.

But yeah, the art and atmosphere were really good! The way it was presented did a good job of leaving a lot to the imagination. Also those monsters were relentless!

It took me a bit to get the hang of the mechanics, but it was pretty engaging when I got a grasp on things.

Good work!

Very eerie and ominous.

Also, I'm sorry to hear about your circumstance. I don't know what to say.

I liked the art style! The gameplay loop really forces you to pay attention.
I felt kinda bad for doing this to the family though.

I liked the aesthetic of the game. Very in the spirit of Halloween. Making a Paper Mario like RPG in five days is pretty ambitious.

Maybe with a bit more time, it could've had more clear visual indicators for things like block timing? Maybe also more NPCs? Or party members? Having maybe a healer or resting points could also benefit the game. (Or some other way to restore stats besides potions.)

Yeah... I'm no good at this game. Interesting idea.
I guess I'd rather have it so the ghosts spawn in places that feel a bit more fair? (Maybe at a radius around the player? Or from off-screen?)

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! I made it to round 10 and got killed.

That was pretty good! I thought it had really well-done art and presentation.

I did find it a bit weird that you can find evidence for Clara's murder, before the main character finds out she's been murdered. I'm guessing this was a time constraint thing? And getting into the box with collisions bugged out for me at one point. Maybe it would've been better if it's used only with the interact key?

But yeah, I liked it! I think it deserves more attention.

Also crazy how you managed to get Naomi Hunter in this game.

Just replayed it, and figured out the cause of the bug!

See, when you die, you drop all your firewood in the location you died. But I forgot to update the HUD to reflect that you have zero wood in your inventory.

So the next time you pick up firewood, it will be accurately reflected again.

Damn, a whole essay for my game? Now I gotta check your game out.

It is true that the audio samples aren't mine. However, the monster sounds did not sound like that out-of-the-box. I edited them to sound the way they do. The original breathing sound was just a generic "main character breathing" sound effect. But I edited it in Audacity to until it sounded creepy and uncanny. Where it seems kinda human-like, but something is wrong with it.
(Also fun fact: The sample used for the monster death noise was from Super Minecraft Kid screaming.)

As for the wood bug you mentioned, I think I might have encountered it before. I assumed I just forgot to update the HUD. But if you can't add wood to the fire anymore, that's probably a bit more concerning.

But yeah, thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

Interesting idea. Although, I kinda wish rating someone's sanity had more of a consequence, or acknowledgement.
