Implement dynamic left/right audio balance as a function of yaw viewing angle?

Hi I was thinking, would it make any sense to optionally apply some function to the L/R audio output as a function of yaw angle? If a character is facing me and I turn my head 90 deg left, I would hear him more on my right hear (also there would be some small time shift introduced just as in binaural audio). Not sure how this sounds like in reality, or if this has been tried. Maybe it's a stupid idea for some reason. I searched a bit and couldn't find anything relevant.

The PC version of HereSphere has an "emulate spatial audio" feature in the user settings, which changes the audio balance as you rotate your head. It sort of works, but really doesn't make much of a difference in practice, since for VR180 vids, you're most likely looking forward most of the time. It also caused some audio issues occasionally, so it's disabled by default. I haven't implemented it for the Quest standalone version, though.
