Is it possible to publish unpublished software made by me on itch.io, even if not necessarily in the field of games, pixel art and tools?

Publishing unpublished software is the whole point of itch. You can even publish published software. Itch is not exclusive. You can sell your stuff on other platforms as well and even link to there from your project page. You will find many games with a link to their steam page.

Also publishing unfinished software. There is status prototype and in development to indicate, it is not finished.

Accounting software is tools. Basically every software that is not a game is a tool. That is the whole point of sofware, doing tasks. So even games could be considered tools, but the purpose is recreation.

The other stuff is not of legal nature. It is of terms of service of itch and community rules. Self advertising is not allowed in most places. There is that announcement thread and you can have devlogs and such. But there are also rules, you should read before posting.

But you should not expect much traffic coming from within itch to your accounting project. As you have observed, the people here are interested in all things around games. You have to advertise your stuff outside of itch.

Please do not. Following is for people that publish stuff. I do not publish stuff.

You will not get notifications of my postings. Following only puts people in your feed when they publish stuff. This is not twitter. (Actually, twitter is no longer twitter either ;-)

Look, you misunderstood. I do not pass my information on to others. I'm not a hacker. I am against all information theft. Even in Italy it is illegal. Relax. I was tired and couldn't explain myself well.

Maybe consider using a different translator app. If you really talk like that in fluent English, you are really incomprehensible at times. English is not my first language either. I think I got rather fluent over the years, but I also noticed that those translators that pop up if you write translator in a search engine have become quite good.

Also, this was not about data theft. It just gives you no benefit. There are not even public reviews on itch. If a profile is private and non publisher you will never get any notification. Honestly, I do not even understand why you can follow accounts that have this disabled.

In theory, a user that is not a developer could become an "influencer" on itch. You can have public collections and people will see what games you rate in their feed if they follow you. I have yet to see such an account (someone that does not publish, but has hundreds of followers). I did see some publisher accounts though, that do rate games and manage collections of game suggestions.

Maybe I misunderstood what you wrote to me when you mentioned "data theft", because I didn't understand what you really wanted to tell me. It seems to me that you are suspicious of me and my business. I am a serious developer, who started programming from 1987 until today, I studied a lot, I am self-taught, and when I said "to publish some software" I should have specified "to publish some software conceived, designed and created solely by me" like all the software that I put up for sale legally and exclusively on itch.io (even if I made an attempt on Game Jolt which didn't satisfy me and I requested and obtained the removal of all my data from that account).

I am a regularly registered user on itch.io.

I am not nor will I ever be an "influencer" or any other person who advertises other people's software, nor am I interested in software made by others. If I need a software tool, I am able to conceive, design and create it starting from the lowest level (Assembly programming of peripherals) so that it conforms to my needs as much as possible. It may happen that, if it turns out particularly well, I decide to sell it on itch.io.

Many video games I have created I developed first for 16 Bit platforms (MS-Dos, Windows XP) and subsequently redeveloped them for 32 Bit platforms (Windows 10 and Windows 11).

What regrets me is that there are very few people I know who believe that I am capable of doing all of this on my own. On the other hand, I think it is understandable (I have never boasted of my intelligence). To be credible nowadays you have to invest mountains of dollars: registration of the work, copyright, VAT number, advertising and have a spectacular image of yourself in the eyes of the Internet. Mine are mainly economic problems. But also about how badly my state, Italy, is, unfortunately I have to admit.

You didn't offend me and I'm glad you honestly made your opinions clear. Good evening.

Why should I? You are mixing and mistaking stuff, it seems.

I put this through a translator app back and forth, and it seems to translate correctly.

Following is a mechanic better suited for other social media. That is what I was talking about.

Maybe try different translator pages. Whatever comes up on DuckDuckGo or Bing maybe. Just enter translator. If Google made you think I accused you of being a hacker, other misunderstandings are bound to happen eventually. You can also put the output of one translator in the input of the other and translate back and forth to see, if it sounds funny or changes meaning.

To reiterate my statement: "Following" is only useful if the followed account publishes things. I do not publish.

I am indifferent to your business. It does not concern me. I play games. You make accountant software. We have no common connections besides posting in a public forum.

I get it, I misinterpreted a google email, but rest assured, I think you might be a moderator; I too am against any theft of information and I never thought that you were involved in the Google message.

They only gave information on the safety and reliability of websites on the Internet, warning that they will close down counterfeit ones. They also want sites to be transparent and understandable.

In reference to my account I am proceeding with this thing.

But itch.io is ultra-secure, in my opinion.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. Maybe a translation issues again. Did you get a captcha maybe? There are no "google messages" of any kind involved with the interactions on itch. Also, moderators on itch have that blue badge next to their username.

It is not. Accounts get hacked all the time. And malware gets uploaded all the time. Itch is a honey pot for malware spreaders.

I didn't receive any captcha, but only an email message from Google on my smartphone. It was a generic message about the security of websites in general, precisely to avoid the existence of accounts with malware or those dealing with computer privacy. They don't accuse me, but they also gave mandatory guidelines for VAT, the purpose and characteristics of what you would like to sell.

And I intend to follow them, even if I'm a little late.

If you have business dealings with google, like selling on the playstore, they might send you stuff like this. Otherwise, this sounds like a phishing attack.

Also, to be technical, you did not receive it on your smartphone. You received it on your email account. If you received it "on your smartphone", I would be extra sceptical.

Or, translation issues again, did you per chance get an email from itch to your email adress, that just happens to be a gmail adress. If so, please do not confuse the sender of the mail with the isp that you use for email.

If you do business with Google, such as selling on the Play Store, they may send you things like this. Otherwise, it looks like a phishing attack.

I understand. I don't sell on Play Store but I would like to sell on STEAM. I didn't read Google's message carefully, it seems authentic to me, but I have locked hacker attacks on my accounts in the past; Some time ago I had a computer stolen. Now the situation seems to be under control. I reported it to the police, but I don't know if they caught the thief.

Then I changed phone, changed number, but the email remained the same. I changed my password and activated 2-step verification.

Or, still translation issues, you accidentally received an email from Itch to your email address, which just happens to be a Gmail address. If so, don't confuse the sender of the email with the ISP you use for email.

I don't live in USA anyway nor in UK: Have a little mercy. Here, among ordinary people, it is rare to find people who understand Italian, let alone English. Yes there are American tourists, I had a friend of American nationality, I was trying to learn the pronunciation. He participated and won a singing competition in the Piedmont region a few years ago; My wife and I also participated, but he won first prize with an unpublished rap lyric in Italian. What do I do ? Do I move to San Francisco and open a restaurant?

Dear redonihunter, I was a little harsh on you, I'm sorry. I have few sales and I don't understand how I can make money with my software.

Every time I edit a page on my site, I do so because I have added new features, such as new game levels, options menus, eliminated bugs, added screen-shots and improved the understanding of what I am selling.

I am currently almost 2 months behind on the application of Google regulations for sites (expired on December 10, 2023).

I have few sales and I don't understand how I can make money with my software.

Making money on your own with software is basically starting a business on your own. Most people do not operate their own business. They work for someone else.

To sell sofware, you need to make something that people would buy. But chances are, that someone else already made a software capable of doing what your software could do . And if we talk about games, well, there are about 900k games on itch and the vast majority of them are unknown and do not make money.

Small software companies usually do contract work. That means, they have someone willing to pay them to create a software. It is more of a craft thing. Like hireing a painter to paint your house.

But on itch, this is the other way around. You make the software (a game), and try to find people wanting to play it. This is hard.
