I was never a fan of 2d Flappy Bird (because I suck at it), so take my criticisms with a grain of salt. I think this would have been much more fun if this was truly 3d. As it is, its more switching between three 2d plans than navigating a 3d environment where I was expecting more control over the character like the Run flash games if you've played those. I will say that the art and music fit the game very well.

You made the game easier? I fear the state of the game in its first iteration lol this is pretty difficult. Its very hard to see the pipes since the camera is so close to the bird, it is very fun though

Developer

I know... I didn't really think about playtest before the jam, just made 5 people test it and called it a day😂
I'll make the game easier as soon as I get back :)

Pretty fun but it's a bit hard to see how close you are to the pipes

Developer

Hi, thanks for playing! I'll work on that as soon as possible

This is a pretty fun idea. Looks good, sounds good, very easy to understand.

I echo what others have said, the movement is too stiff and the perspective is difficult to work with. I'd recommend having a bit of acceleration to the birds movements to smooth out the motion and either move the camera back, shrink the bird, or have some kind of outline to better see the pipes.

It bugs me that hitting the left/right arrow after I've moved all the way to one side triggers a jump. At first I didn't understand that's what was happening as I was jumping directly into the ceiling and losing.

Getting a point and then immediately moving left or right should have more forgiveness - maybe disable the colliders once you get a point?

Developer

Thanks for the bug reporting, I didn't really know about this issue before. It will be a quick fix.

And I'll try to disable collisions of the other pipes for half a sec like you said

I'm glad you liked the game :)

Thanks for your entry!

Things that I think are good:

  • SFX balance is on point, sounds are familiar and coherent, feels like a part of Flappy Bird multiverse haha.
  • Graphics are stylized and good, like the blockiness and color palette.
  • Controls feel appropriate and simple, as they should be. They are also communicated properly.
  • Good UI that keep you focused on the core gameplay.
  • Easy to replay.

Things that in my opinion could use some polish:

  • UX stuff: bird moves very quickly and it is hard to time your "flaps", as it is hard to understand the 3D space from chosen perspective. As other commenters suggest — making the bird contain less space on the game screen can improve the feeling of movement and make it easier to aim. Also you can try and tweak the amplitude of the bird's vertical movement. Other rows of pillars distract from the main goal, I would suggest to use them more intensively from the start to "sell" the 3D aspect of the game better.
  • Feels very hard to get scores. One wrongly timed SPACE button can ruin the run, no place for a mistake and I don't feel in control while playing. As if the placement of the pillars is more responsible for my score than skill. I had to grind for every point but could make it only to 11 pts.
  • Game lacks some background music, which can support the experience.
  • I would try to make something with overall visuals — as I said the stylization is good, but the same empty background with checkers make it feel a little bit repeatative.

Overall:

Nice concept and good implementation of the core. With some polish and attention to some UX problems can be even more fun and captivating experience. Good entry!

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

  • I’ll try to change the speed of the bird when falling, I just don’t want him to feel floaty. Maybe wing animations could reduce this feeling
  • There’s a phrase that I didn’t really understand as I don’t speak english so well. I tried to translate it with google but it doesn’t really make sense. “Other rows of pillars distract from the main goal, I would suggest to use them more intensively from the start to "sell" the 3D aspect of the game better.”
  • About repetitiveness, maybe a day/night cycle or selecting a random biome at every game could fix the issue? (meadow, city, volcano, desert...) It would take a really long time to do this so I'm not sure if I will. But if I get feedback from other people who think it would be worth the effort, I would definitely work on that!

I’m glad to see you enjoyed the game, an update should come within about 3 weeks so don’t forget to check out :)

I like the idea of changing columns it does add a dimension to the game!

I think the visibility is hard since the bird is massive and you really have to guess where the gap is that you can enter. Maybe moving the camera a bit back or reducing the bird's size would help? or maybe even some sort of transparent thing or outlining the pipes even though the bird so you see where they

Also, it'd be nice to move around with AD as well as arrows.

Besides those the gameplay, sound, and art are quite nice.

Thanks for checking the game, I'll add to AD keys and try things to fix the bad readability. I won't be back home before 2 weeks but I'll try to update the game as soon as possible

This is a fun 3d version for flappy bird, it gives you a sense of achievement when you reach more and more points (I stopped at 25 because i failed a lot but will keep playing to go over 88 haha) now, a few points to give that i think will make the game much better, and people won't stop playing.

* A pause menu, will help a lot, sometimes you need to pause for a second or even if you need to change something, which leads me to another suggestion.

*Options menu with at least sound volume and also the possibility to change from fullscreen to windowed mode, It's something very useful for people to play better

*Music, music and more music. This game with a fun beat on the background would keep people dancing and flapping all over.

*Controls on screen, even thou you have them in your page, it's a great addition just to have them there. Or even in the pause menu to avoid having more stuff on the main hud.

Besides this recommendations, the game is overall fun and i can see streamers trying to reach the highscore a lot! Great work!

Hi, thanks a lot for playing the game! I'm glad to hear that you made it that far :) Most of the people I asked to test it didn't reach 20. Now, about your feedback:

  • As the game was meant to be played in really short sessions, I didn't really think about implementing a pause menu, but now that you mention it, it seems pretty obvious that the game would benefit from it.
  • For the options and controls, I guess everything should fit in the pause menu without making it too overwhelming. I'm just a bit worried that changing the ratio of the window might completely break the UI, so I'm not sure if it will be something doable. But I will try.
  • About the lack of music, I felt like something was missing, I just couldn't tell what! I guess that's it haha. Anyway, I just found the perfect track, so it won't be a problem real soon.

Thanks again for your feedback. I'm not home right now, but I will update the game as soon as I get back :)
