Oh! That's not mentioned in any of the instructions. "mouse button + shovel" and "Can you dig up..." tells me to find the "x marks the spot" to use the shovel. But just "0/1" next to a picture of a coin doesn't tell me to look off the path for coins, esp. when the picture of a chest after digging it up is full of (pictures of) coins.

you are absolutely right. This feature of picking up coins scattered around the maze was one of the last ones I put in the game, because I thought that just looking for the treasure would not be enough content.
