Read Winnifred Phillip's textbook on game music! Thanks for the support android love, hope this helps your game!

I'm not finding her critique of generic music.  Are you implying that because she writes custom music in tandem with developers, she naturally considers her way better? I'm interested in seeing the research results against using music that isn't custom.

It's an incredible read man! I hope you enjoy, did you buy the book!? Read sections on immersion etc. Pretty standard concept in game music writing :)

I've done some stuff I consider immersive with found film footage. I'm just wondering if seeking out a composer to work with is just an option and not a mandate.

The nuances of game music are as deep as the art, story, game mechanics....there are layers for sure in terms of the needs for a AAA title vs. small indie project....to then a game jam in 2 days. I'd strongly suggest reading that textbook if you're curious about the role music plays in ways we never considered initially :) shoot me an email joe@past2presentaudio.com if you ever want to chat further as well !

I don't do email. I just do itch. I'd DM you if itch had a system.
