This was the former general feedback thread, but since it turned out to be mostly about Mac issues, I renamed it.

Please post any Mac feedback and issues here.

How to start the game:

The easiest way is to use the Itch App and install and run the game from there. It works just like Steam.

If you want to run the standalone App, there are some hoops to jump through at the moment unfortunately as I don't have the App signed yet. Best is to follow this video.

If you are on the new MacOS Ventura follow the steps below, that have been kindly provided by RamBic. Check also this link about allowing Apps from anywhere.

Step 1:

  • In terminal type: sudo spctl --master-disable
  • enter your systems password and <return>
  • Check that System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll down to the Security section, it should now have a third option "Anywhere" that is chosen.

Step 2:
In terminal: chmod -R 777 /user/<name of user>//Downloads/StarbaseSim-2022-11-18-Mac/mac.app
(provide the correct path after /user/... - best is to simply drag the app and drop it in Terminal)

Step 3: run the app  (you could also do that in Terminal with: open /user/<path>

Step 4: Once the app is running it would be wise to add
sudo spctl --master-enable
to restore the System Settings on Security.

Hello, the mac seems to be not working, i am fairly sure i am the administrator of this computer, however this popup comes up https://imgur.com/a/VHeoq7j

Hi, thanks for trying it out and giving feedback. I don't know anything about Macs, unfortunately. But you might have to set permission separately. Maybe you could try out the following:

with terminal you need to navigate to the download folder (or wherever you put your app) and add the following:

cd PATH_TO_YOUR_APP/APP_NAME.app/Contents/MacOS/

and add the following:

chmod -R 777 APP_NAME.app

from https://forum.unity.com/threads/mac-unity-build-from-a-pc-not-opening-on-mac.947...

It seems you can also drag the folder from Finder into the terminal instead of typing the app name. See here for general info about setting permissions with terminal: https://www.handlebar-online.com/articles/how-do-i-use-chmod-on-mac/

Let me know if this helps.

Hello, using the terminal did not work, however, if you select get info, then run with rosetta then launch the app, it seems to run fine! https://imgur.com/zYyoan0

Great! and interesting. In the build settings I selected "Intel and Apple silicon", but it seems you still have to specifically choose Rosetta, if you are on the newer platform.

How is it running?

(1 edit)

seems to be running fine, only issue is the colliders of the ship seems weird, as when im stacking the booster, and nothing is near the ship, it seems to want to lose a flap or 2, or bounce of the pad entirely

Odd, there was the same problem on Linux. But also on Windows sometimes I had it randomly popping up from its stand. I hope to fix it with the new update which should come out in a few days.

If you can't stack it right now, you should still be able to load the full stack at least via the main menu.

Is the mouse interaction with the control panels working? There were problems on Linux, so maybe Mac is also effected.

Yes, i am able to load the full stack via the menu, and sometimes whilst interacting with the control panel the mouse goes off screen and opens up the dock, making the control panel slightly harder to use

ok, thanks for the feedback! I guess, I should make the cursor behaving similar to Linux then. Probably I change it completely in the future when I don't use WebGL anymore.

I just payed for StarbaseSim. I followed the methods described. It is a non-starter.

Neither changing permissions or using terminal worked.

I am using a 2020 MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.0.1 (It is usually stated when an app is too old for the latest systems, but I could not see any such warning before I payed). If you have a new version on the way I will wait a bit, but if not I think I should have my money back. Can't open

I probably should reply here as well, if someone sees this. I am working on this problem and you can find more below in the thread with spacelewiss

In any case, the old version from August seems to work. So you can try this.

Hello! i have found a way to be able to run the game (Without using run as rosetta) I am sorry it is not full screen, but there is personal info on screen that i wish not to share, but i have managed to make a tutorial that works! https://streamable.com/cqf7iu

Great, and thank you for making the video!

Looks even more cumbersome than Linux and Windows, unfortunately. If I ever make some money, I guess I have to pay the extortion money :D

You could keep 100% of 100 sold apps, or keep 70% of 100 000 sold apps. You do the math.

100k? You are funny! :D

The problem is, I don't have a Mac and never used one. So, I have no idea how that stuff works. We should be happy that Unity makes it possible for a solo developer like me to even provide a Mac version.

Regarding code signing, I started now with Windows to apply for a certificate. But it takes ages to get handed out or I have done it incorrectly. Let's see. For Mac I don't know, if it's even possible to do, without having one myself, but I haven't looked much into it, yet. I am still fairly new to everything.

There are not many people downloading the Mac versions and even less contributing. I'll try to do my best to keep the Mac (and Linux) versions working for all of you, but it takes away time from developing the game, which is what I want to do. I don't want to sell the game, I want people to contribute to the development and to share it.

I have sent you a mail regarding your Mac troubles.

[Edit] I just realized, that you were probably referring to the App store with the 70%. I was referring more to the "App cannot be opened because it was not from an identified developer" - in Windows you can rid of this kind of stuff with paying something like 100 bucks for code signing. Yes, it gives you a tiny bit of safety, but it's not worth in the slightest the amount of money imho, at least not for me.

Regarding app store fees, the 30% grab by Apple or Google is absurd and only possible due to a duopoly that should be fought against as hard as possible. If I can, I'll never sell something on such a store. I won't have a mobile version any time soon anyway. So that's easy to say :D

(+1)

I was thinking the Mac AppStore. To refuse to pay their fees is fine, but you would make more money. But you do what you are happy doing.

You can keep the fee I paid. You might need it.

Fantastic Visuals, Absolutely Inspiring work!  Controls and Sequence of events are a worrying challenge though... my most used Key so far is 'R'.  I am still early in the learning curve, need time to properly control and operate this beautiful beast from Stacking to Catching!  :D
I also Admin to 515k members at https://www.facebook.com/groups/spaceXverse/

Thanks for the feedback! I still don't get too much of it. So please keep it coming.

I also use 'R' a lot :D Hope the learning goes well. There is no tuning on the learning curve whatsoever.

I assume you posted about it in the facebook group. That might explain the sudden increased amount of clicks from facebook. So thanks also for sharing!

Works very well! I tend to need 'C'ontrol Panels everywhere to make sure everything lines up, but all 3 QD circles on Green make me happy.    Would be nice if we could 'Save State' of our progress so we could reload after a dumb mistake, but harsh sim realism is good too.

Yeah, we will keep advertising your Starbase Sim endeavor on every update.  You have key functionality down very well, as more functional details are changed/revealed every week.  Owe is a great reference, and hopefully we can make more loyal gamers out of our 515,500 members ^_^   https://www.facebook.com/groups/spaceXverse/posts/2857643601207313/

Nice, thanks!

I don't think general saving is necessary at this point (you can save some controller parameters). If stacking goes wrong there is always a short cut and now you can also just put propellant in whenever you want.

I probably should look into having the control panel also just as a menu like thing which you can open and close. The current version is still from the beginning where I only had fixed panels.

Hello, I saw the tweet from @CSI_Starbase, your work looks great!! I would like to try the game.

But same as RamBic here. I'v got an M1 Macbook Pro running MacOS Ventura 13.0.1 and the same message shows up. I've tried both method described in this thread but it doesn't work..

(+1)

Thanks! I am investigating the issue. A quick search only showed problems with the Unity editor on the new Mac version, but it might make trouble also with the build.

(+1)

I have made the old Mac version from August available to download again. Maybe you could try this with new MacOS to see if this works?

It works! (but you have to use the command in your terminal like described before in this thread)

Thanks for making the older version available again.

So only the old version works with new MacOS?

So, it could be a problem with the new MacOS and the new Unity version or a general problem with my Mac build. I still haven't got any reply to my tweet so I don't even know for sure that it works with other MacOS versions.

In my case, yes

Hey, could you try the new version that I have put in the download section, if you have time?
Also, on the old version, do the mods work for you there?

The new 2022-11-28 version (with the tank farm update) works with my M1 Mac! (note : I still have to put the command into the terminal.

I haven't tried the mods on the older version..

(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! I am not a 100% sure yet, what's happening, but it's getting clearer.

You can download the mods now separately here and copy them into the data folder. If this works and you can use them, everything is clear. If not, you can at least play it without mods :D

They are not very useful in the current state anyway.

It works just fine on Mac (I am Using MacOS Ventura) if you launch it from the Itch.io app.

Hi, thanks for letting me now! It seems with the App you can circumvent the OS warnings on all systems. Great! I will push it more then.

Whenever I try to open Starbase Sim with the itch app, a problem report pops up and it says that Starbase Sim quit unexpectedly. Im using the most recent version.

(1 edit)

It happens as soon as you click start on the itch app or does it load something?

It happens only with the app?

Can you look for the player.log file and send it to me, if there is any? It should be here: ~/Library/Logs/Ashtorak/StarbaseSim/

or in the Unity folder like shown below, not sure

Since I got some player.logs now, it seems to be a general problem with the latest patch. There will be a new one later today that hopefully fixes it.

Maybe just me.. when I launch the game I have no cursor? ESC and TAB not working.. reinstalled it and no cigar

You are in the start menu and have no cursor? That's very odd.

Could you search for the file "Settings.ini" and add the following line to it, then you boot directly into the game:

SkipStartMenu = True

and see if you can move around there and if ESC works there. If not, I have no idea. Haven't encountered that issue before.
