im kind of at a loss of what to do. i keep attempting to load the free version of the game on my browser and it freezes and eventually crashes my entire laptop. im playing on a chromebook, maybe that could be the issue.

I've looked into this and it seems that RenPy games don't run in-browser on Chromebooks. I'm honestly not sure why that is, but I did find some forum threads saying that you can run the Linux downloadable with some settings changed and it'll work. I know that's not ideal, sorry.
