For PayPal, there are two ways for sellers to configure their accounts to accept payments.
- They can either sell directly through their own PayPal merchant account (Seller is “merchant of record”)
- They can sell through the itch.io merchant account and collect their earnings as a payout from us at a later time (itch.io is “merchant of record”)
When they are selling through their own merchant account, then they have full access to the information about the buyer as if they created their own PayPal checkout page. For a PayPal seller on our platform, you can determine who is the merchant of record for the payment during checkout, it will show you who you are sending the money to. If it says “itch.io” then it’s us, otherwise it will show the developer’s name.
Generally the information a seller would have when they sell through their own merchant account is: Your email address, your address if it was provided through the checkout flow, and possibly information about how the payment was funded. Misuse of this information would result in suspension of the PayPal merchant account, so if you think that they misusing that information you should contact us and PayPal with details about the abuse.
For all sellers on itch.io we provide the following information to the seller: email address of the buyer, how they accessed the checkout page, and country code. We provide this information to allow sellers to make informed decisions regarding fraud and safety around accepting payments.
Hope that helps
