Poked around a bit and it looks like this is part of a series of sorts? Would you recommend playing other games in the series before playing this or is it a stand-alone experience?
Completely stand-alone! It just references everything I'd made in the past. Same with Venaitura; CoT's a culmination of what I'd learned and come up with at the time, same as that game!
