Put those into portrait folder which opens when you open folder from portrait selection menu.
tried adding a portrait, but even though i have a folder labelled 'portraits' in the game's main directory and in the files folder, the game doesn't recognize either. while i can still manually search for images (which takes time away from actually playing the game) the feature as a whole lacks any obvious tutorial.
