Advice for keeping your light novel "light"?

I was thinking of submitting my first published project Jake In The City for this jam, but for a number of reasons (one being I eventually realized it was a bit too spicy for a PG 13 rating, LOL) I decided against it, so I'm still brainstorming ideas for something for the jam.

While I was writing Jake In The City, though, I noticed it ended up being a lot longer than I expected. Does anyone else have this problem when writing, where you have trouble estimating how long your final product will be? And does anyone have any advice for keeping your writing from getting too wordy, unwieldy, or otherwise just-plain-too-long?

so, quickest thing i can do is link this really really rad article talen wrote . It's probably the best summation of my advice. Personally i have found that writing a REALLY bare bones summary and beefing that up helps with length. Mines not up yet but i went from having aground 5k near the end of the plot of my LN to around 9. Get the story down and worry about detail later!
