Hey, LibGDX! That's what I work in. Not for this jam, I only did music, but for a bigger game I'm trying to make. Slow going but I like having so much control. Would be nice if it had any hope of being finished, though...

Your game's a really good premise. I like that there's a time and place to have many weak guys as opposed to the big ultimate dude. I agree that the music added a ton, and I liked how you switched between the two synced tracks, but a crossfade over a half second or so would make it smoother. I don't know if this is the best way, but you can have each track playing, one muted one not, and modify their volumes multiplied by the delta time in the render() method when it's time to crossfade. I think.

I also loved the death animations/sound effect. Super cute for some reason.

At the end of the day, though, it just wasn't super fun...? I wish I had better feedback, but I don't really know why, I typically love turn-based strategy.

I almost gave up before understanding how to play, but once I did it was fun :)
I like the idea and the mechanic, but I think there are 2 design parts not fitting together : merging units (very cool mech' btw) and the tactical difficulty curve. In a tactical, you begin with only a few units, to understand the gameplay first, and then gain more units and a variety of them, to improve the strategic gamefeel.
What I like in M5 is to merge units, but with doing that, I have less of them, less options, and so, less winning strategies, which feels wrong : I want to do both !!
Hopefully, I think there are tons of design solutions that doesn't imply to change your core gameplay ! Honestly, I would enjoy playing this kind of game on mobile :)
(also, congrats for programming this alone, it looks like a lot of work !)

Thank you so much for the comment!

If I had an hour to add one more thing before the submission date, it would have been a controls/guide page. I ran out of time though and had to rely on people reading the project description which I feel was a big mistake. I also agree that it could have been fun to allow the player to get more units,  but I ran out of time though before I could play with the formula. I was finishing the enemy AI hours before the deadline, so there's so much I would've liked to tweak and play with that I just didn't have time for. (You assumed correctly, there was a lot of programming work to do already lol)

I appreciate the sentiment that you might be interested in playing something like this on mobile. Maybe I'll polish M5 up or release something similar for those types of devices someday. :)

I like the idea of building "megazords" in order to defeat waves of alien. The deplacement/fusion/attack mechanics are easely understandable for the player, but i wonder how enemies work. Maybe an animation of their attacks could provide the player some clues where not to go to avoid them and shoot from afar or predict their movements. I also did'nt know why player's unit move between turns. Some knockback effect ?
It's a very interesting game though !

Thank you so much for playing!

At the end of each turn, the player units are drawn towards the center of the screen assuming there's room for them to move. The idea is that the alien queen has some kind of gravitational effect pulling you in, but I agree it didn't really read too well. The enemies attack by pushing you towards the alien queen as well. I really would have liked to better animate their movements/attacks and the drawing in of players at the end of the turn, but I ran out of time!
