I'm not sure I understand what I'm supposed to do. I catch a fish, then it sparkles (?) sometimes and the target (?) in the water flashes. It seems like all I can do next is either run around/jump with the fish on the hook, or release the fish. But none of those options seem to advance the game.

That's my bad, i didn't manage to make the tutorial clear enough. Basically, you can throw the fish the same way you throw your hook (DOWN + X). It allows you to hit the target using hte fish as a projectile.
