Limits on character size/fonts?

Hey all, excuse me if this is answered somewhere else as this is my first Game Jam. I've looked at the submission rules a few times and didn't see the answer.

What are the the rules around font and text? For the last day or so I've been struggling to have text display legibly at a 64x64 resolution and scaled up. Looking around at other submissions it almost seems like font isn't subject to the 64x64 requirement as long as it's not being used in a cheeky way e.g. using font as a character in the game.

Can anyone give me some guidance?

Just in case the jam host is too busy to answer this in time, I'll put a useful looking previously answered topic here:

Thanks for the thread but it seems to be unrelated although very similar.

I guess my question is different in the sense that I'm almost asking the exact opposite of their question.

I was also going to reference that asciipetscii thread. Font is not supposed to go outside of the 64x64 screen.

You could try this out...

  1. Download this font: https://www.dafont.com/perfect-dos-vga-437.font
  2. Type what you need and hit the "Print Screen" Key
  3. Paste it into MS-PAINT.
  4. Select the portion with the text and hit "Ctrl" + "Numpad Minus"
  5. Clean it up.

I just used this process to make the icon for my submission.

Anything drawn is subject to the resolution restriction, there's no exception for text. It's probably one of the trickiest things to implement well though!
