This game is absolutely delicious. Feels (at least to me) very much like Link's Awakening or other Zelda games and I loved both those and this. I found it super charming and it totally doesn't overstay its welcome.
I have two main criticisms:

1. All the upgrades / weapons (besides the sprint) do the exact same thing, which is fighting enemies and destroying barriers / plants. The only difference being the durability of the barrier you are able to destroy. And I would say the axe completely trumps the sword for being safer and able to hit way more things at once. I think it even beats the claymore (which oddly I got after the AMVE).

and 2. The enemies go from "complete pushover" to "will two-shot you" with no in-between. I made a mistake like this in my game (even worse so), so I relate a little and get how tricky enemy balancing is, though. Although, at the same time, maybe this is a way of expressing how dangerous the cave area is? Idk. I personally found it a bit jarring but it wasn't too bad after a couple of attempts getting used to it.

Overall this is a really great entry. Easter eggs are fun, the atmosphere is good. I hope you keep making awesome games!

Thank you for your kind words!

The axe definitely ended up overpowered, since I originally made it with a much longer wind-up time. That didn't really feel good to play, so I made it much faster... at which point I should probably have revisited the damage value instead of building the entire rest of the game around it. Plus, I personally love this style of weapon in games, so I guess I just couldn't resist the temptation to make it too good. :)

(Alternatively, I could probably have made the claymore an intended upgrade earlier on, and have an even stronger "straight sword" type weapon as an optional secret. Although, at that point there would also need to be more level to fit all those items, at which point there should probably also be more tile variety, so...)

As for the enemies, I think that's mainly just an issue of only having 2 enemy types (two for the overworld and two for the cave, one being just a reskinned overworld enemy). Although, you could also say it's a gentle way of nudging the player to explore a bit more if they struggle with the cave, because if they had found every optional item up until that point, it should take a regular enemy 5 hits to kill them.😉

But yeah, if I had spent more than a week on this game, adding more enemy and weapon variety would definitely have been my priority.
