The core problem I see with this game is there isn't an opportunity to be better than the other player, the optimal way to play is to just hold in the direction of the opponent. If there was so way to out the other play such as a dodge or just some additional mechanic, it would have added a lot.
I think with a little more time this could have been more fun to play. If there was a possibility to jump, or to maybe grab your opponent, and have some feeling of competition between players, it would have made the experience more engaging.
Also, design wise, I think having a little more breathing room on either side of the platform would help show that you can fall off, and have more of a sense of peril.
