That menu screen is breathtaking. A huge pale sun going down behind the dunes, sky gradient from purple to red, mountains cut against the horizon. It looks like a 70s sci-fi paperback painting and it's one of the most beautiful images in the entire jam.
Video options in a jam game, too. Render downscale, Pixelation and CRT as checkboxes, plus separate Master, SFX and Music volumes. Letting the player tune the visual filter is a level of finish almost nobody bothers with. The car HUD is detailed as well, km/h, RPM and gear all updating, so there's actual simulation under it rather than just "go forward". And the tyre marks left in the sand are gorgeous, I drove in circles just to watch the trail. The low poly cat portrait with the grumpy face in the bottom left corner is a lovely bit of character too.
Where I got lost, literally: I drove for nearly 30 seconds and never found a single enemy, so my score stayed at 0. The desert is big and empty and there's no compass, minimap or arrow pointing anywhere, so I was just circling with no objective. The terrain is all one orange with little variation, which makes it easy to lose track of direction and of where you've already been.
New Game also only worked on a double click. The art direction and the car feel are excellent, I just needed something telling me where to go. Also worth saying: listing every asset as CC0 or CC-BY and shipping both web and Windows as downloadable zips is a properly solid answer to the end of life question.
