If you downgrade back to the older JOIPlay and RPG Maker plugin versions from here, it should fix the issues. Unfortunately, downgrading does not appear to be possible without first uninstalling, and it is unclear how much that will remove.
Apparently though the issue might just have been some setting? I reset all to default and the issue has vanished. I have no clue which one, but I suspect it was a setting that was the default in an older version and is no longer, and for some reason the older version was fine with it and the new one isn't.
