Regarding the question of whether the game is safe

I'm new to itch and this is a great website, but I was wondering if there's any human moderation on the games to ensure their safety.I downloaded 2 games right now with a nervous feeling.

There are malware scans on the server side, many games are looked at by itch.io staff, and if you find one that looks suspect, you can report it.

If you are in any way suspicous, better wait to play those games. There is malware uploaded daily to Itch, that was not detected by scanners and not recognised or not looked at by staff.

The oldest malware I encountered was about 2 years old. And several half a year old. And quite a lot 4 weeks old. And a huge lot up to a week old. That means, out in the open, indexed in search & browse and not quarantined.

You might want to stick to browser games for now. And to downloadable games that are well established. Like many hundreds of followers and a very active comment section. With genuine commentors.

There is also the sandbox mode in the Itch app. It does protect against some types of malware attacks.
