The levels after the first one have obstacles and projectiles which require you to strafe left and right. Your suggestion of adding tricks seems like an interesting idea, I'll look further into that! To answer your question, the spikes at the top of the ladder are timed, so if you are fast enough you can get there and quickly jump past them before the lava kills you. Thanks for playing!
