It is a lot to keep track of at first, but once you get the swing of things it moves pretty smoothly. The game is almost entirely deterministic. I can't say you don't get to make choices, you do. You don't get to make interesting choices. You should always summon a sidekick. The rooster and dragon busted. The cat is good. And the parrot is bad but not useless. There is almost no down side to using them. Attacking gets you closer to your goal. Defending and healing do not. Unless you roll three ones you should never take damage. If defending or healing gave some kind of benefit like charging a super attack it would add an interesting choice. Even then the only consideration would be reduce HP as quickly as possible. There is no secondary objective. It is only deal as much damage as possible as quickly as possible. I looked up a D4 bell curve and there is an 11% chance a chaos pawn will skip its turn. a 20% it will hurt itself if it is attacking which is a 50% chance. and a 32% it will do nothing special. 63% of the time chaos pawns are just kind of boring. The elements are a good idea, but it costs progress to interact with them. If you don't have progress or just don't want to spend it on a chance to change your element it is functionally randomness for the sake of randomness. There is a video I think you should watch. It is Unreliable wizard by NPI. This game is my unreliable wizard. It is charming and I love the art and I am not going to play it again.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to play the game!

Most of the issues you mention running into are things that would've come up during playtesting, which is something I unfortunately don't have access to. I can only playtest myself, and at some point I will simply not experience the game the way a new player would. It's been valuable seeing your complaints, as I do always try to avoid making games that play themselves. Emphasis on try. There's always more to learn and you've given me a lot to consider (the video you shared did, too).

Thanks again for playing! It's unfortunate you didn't end up enjoying it, but I appreciate you sharing your thoughts regardless.

If you need someone to playtest in the future I am happy to help. :)
