I have ideas for a rough story mode taking you through a few specific timed challenges and things but that might be superfluous.

If by story mode you mean more like a series of unique levels, then it wouldn’t be superfluous, especially if they influence how the player interacts with the cube.
Not sure if it's a great idea, but I think you can get some really interesting results by experimenting with different types of cubes beyond the standard one (Pyraminx, Megaminx, etc).
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on future updates :)
