How does your game fit the theme?
Going/Being "Outside The Box" is a recurring idea in the game.
Sometimes mentioned in dialogue explicitly, but usually in the background, such as literally jumping out of a box at the start of the second story, or in the game layout:
As you, the player playing as an observer outside the box of the visual novel. Specifically in all of the endings, there is at least some reference to going outside of their box of monotony that the characters are used to, changing themselves.

Love the rat part

Thanks!

I hear the DM Dokuro bells in the OST!!!!!!! Peak!!!

Definitely one of the most effective narratives I've seen from anything in the jam, I loved getting to see two different sides of things, and I do not regret playing as the rat first, it made it even more satisfying seeing how it connected to the other side. The rat gameplay could be a bit better, but for the story it serves its purpose well, and acts as a great mixup to the visual novel style. Good stuff.

One, thank you for playing, I'm glad you liked the way the storytelling is done, and also yeah the rat stuff is a little short and needs more depth/challenge for sure, I really wanted to do a lot more! (Better puzzles, platforming, making it not feel like just a bonus to the first story etc) But time was creeping up, and I prefered smaller and mediocre simple sections with better story detail, rather than much larger broken stuff.

(And Two, I'm lost for words because I had no idea who DM Dokuro was, the bell probably just sounds similar, so I'm really sorry... BUT! After some quick research I can promise I'm going to listen to some of his stuff later, I won't report back or anything but my findings imply that I'd like his stuff, so you have my word.)

Anyway, again, thanks for playing!

DM Dokuro uses the same bell instrument heard near the end of the first side of the story quite a lot, to the point of becoming something of a signature of his music! It just reminded me of that and it made me very happy

The story is good and i liked the idea of two intersecting stories. I think the rat part needs a better game feel, it lacks SFX etc, but this is my only suggestion. Nice work overall!

Developer (1 edit)

I won't lie I was pushing my sound effects deadline further and further until I had no time at all, so I completely agree with you that the game would've been better with a lot more time spent on the SFX and general game feel. Thank you for playing, and for the feedback! :D

Really cool concept, I love how the two stories connect and build into each other, especially the rat part, that was a nice payoff

Didn’t expect to enjoy both the VN and platforming parts this much, they actually work really well together. Also the attention to detail is great

Overall really solid and creative game. If you get a chance, check out my game too, I’d really appreciate a rating and some feedback

Thank you for the very kind words, and I'll be sure to add your game to my list! :)

I'm usually not a story game person but this is definitely one that kept me entertained. Good work :)

Developer

Thanks for trying it out!

I loved the two stories intersecting idea! The rat being offhandedly mentioned in the first story at first and then playing as it in the next was great set up and pay off! great job!

Developer(+1)

Good to know you liked that! Thank you for playing! :)

This is actually so creative, I love it. A short story that's done really well, especially with the different perspectives (the two sides of the priest, and obviously the rat). I also liked the nod to the rat in both paths of initial questioning (the rat tail going by the window for the roommate, and the mention to the experiment from the doctor). The level of detail really made it even cooler to play. Even there being like a mention of spontaneous combustion to the brand of safe that you pass through as a rat.

Also a big fan of the relationship between Roman and Sidney, it's nice to see Roman trusting Sidney no matter what they choose. And I also found it really funny that the people cared more about the rat saying mocha than the fact that the rat was able to say that.

I could also listen to the music on repeat, which I'm doing as I'm writing this review. Good stuff all around, really enjoyed this.

(Just played through the other ending, and there is even that detail in the character icon, the attention to detail on this game is really really cool)

I'm very happy to hear that you liked all of the little details, the characters, and my attempt to lighten the tone! Those were some of the harder things to try and get right, so I'm ecstatic to hear that you even wanted to get both endings. Have a good day!

I like how this is two games in one: a platformer and a telltale-like game. Both of them work well to tell the story together. I also really enjoyed the music!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, and also thanks for playing!

Also, the greatest thorn in my side was the music, so it means a lot for you to say that!

Every single part of this game is awesome! the storytelling with text speed and sprites, the rat puzzle game mechanics, the sprites, the stupid but emotional story. Its a crime this hasn't been rated yet!

Very glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I just found what you said on the discord yesterday in "dev-progress", literally made my day! I didn't expect to see that at all. So an extra thanks specifically to you, and I regret nit-picking by any amount in my review of your submission. Have a great rating week!
