May I ask how you rendered the scenes/displayed them in game? I'm not the best versed in 3D art but it looks like it was rendered out of engine and then displayed as flat images in the game engine. How did you get that wonderful pixelated "shading" for lack of a better word? Excellent game as well...

Of course! You got it spot on; the scenes were all rendered in Blender, touched up in Photoshop (or other programs), and imported as a series of images into the engine.

The look comes from a few things. First, the render settings (render image size, light bounces, etc.) are turned way down in Blender to make the image come out kind of flat and"old-school CGI" looking - which is step one of the process. After this, you have a few options to get that pixelated look:

  1. In Photoshop, I would export using the "Save For Web" option in either GIF or PNG-8 (I believe either will work). Exporting that way, you can select from a few dithering options which is the secret sauce for the pixelated look.
  2. Alternatively, you can also achieve a similar result by opening the sprite in Aseprite, editing the colour palette, and messing with the dithering settings there.
  3. ALSO alternatively, there are a few dedicating dithering programs here on itch. The one I have played around with personally is called "SLK_img2pixel" and I enjoy it.

For this game, I experimented with all of these different methods depending on my mood that day (LOL), but I settled on the Photoshop method for the most part.

I hope this helps! And thank you so much for checking out the game!
