Im not too sure but i think i did this  on my first run and the alternative sprite never shows up again. Try maxing out your reputation with the wolves and see if it comes back. Otherwise, you might have to start over

No, it changes when you either attack or activate a scene with them. It's a hidden number that increases or decreases based on your actions. Violence = decrease and locks everything, non-violence = increase and ulocks. Reputation has nothing to do with it, and you need about 20-30 positive points to keep things unlocked (but again, the number decreases if you attack them).
