Start by choosing a scale (like blues - there’s happy and sad scales). By default, there are 4 tracks: you can put melodic instruments on the upper tracks and rhythmic ones on the lower. Each track has square blocks where you can record variations (0–8). Pick a tempo now or adjust it later. Under 'type', choose an instrument for each track; the bottom track uses the standard drumset by default, which is a good place to start. In the 'edit' section, you can add more tracks or bars if you want. Try different instruments, place blocks on the grid, and hit play. Experimenting is the best way to learn :)
