A cutesy dating sim experience! (Writing this after finishing the A New Friend route) The horror-esque sound design in the earlier parts of the game hit really well, and overall, the pacing works very solidly. I enjoyed getting to know my sleep paralysis demon, and figure out its little quirks and hanging out!

The overall quality of the game feels solid enough. The soundtrack is incredibly chill and the writing is engaging! The environment could have been more responsive with how it reacts to your decor choices (I wanted cables everywhere in the living room and received a quaint bookshelf.) I noticed some small UI bugs like passing an input event down when it wouldn't make sense, where whatever your mouse is hovering over at the time also triggers its text. But overall, it felt like a solid and cohesive experience, which is something not all games that are this flexible in their routing manage. Good job!

The writing and story progression starts out with a slight meander, but quickly accelerates to a fairly brisk pace and keeps it, which felt really good. The self-aware and sarcastic meta-narrator is fun. The worldbuilding / protag characterization felt lightly off because we don't do much besides sleep and go about our chores, but with the context being us having just moved in, and the game being this focused on our budding relationship with [enter sleep paralysis demon name here], it's actually not the most egregious issue. My one massive gripe with the writing is a section of philosophical narration towards the end of the route I played, where the game constructs a sentiment along the lines of "you can grow as much as you want but your core remains". The theme of self-identity and what it means to have a personality were not present at all before this, so it felt a bit jarring to read. Even more importantly, I do not fuck with this line of thought at all! I don't know why the game felt the need to tell me this, and I would've been happier with just getting to hang out with my demon and exploring each other's bodies.

Welcome, Dear Human is a solid dating sim that competently and efficiently shuffles you towards the conclusion and reward of its hook, which is what it needs to do for most people. I wouldn't come to this game for personhood-addressing inquiries, but not all games need to cut that deep. The effort and aspiration towards polish are tangible, and it looks like it has a bright future ahead of it!

[I received some useful gamedev knowledge in return for this review, but it did not affect my views of the game.]
