There's a logical explanation for everything in this game. Well, except for the joke with the fisherman and Morden. When dealing with Mirania, as with any other boss, you need to find the optimal method for defeating her. This will determine the speed of your victory. For example, Violet is a good shield against Lamia's magic. But she needs to keep her body well hidden.

You can usually find out about the characters' locations from the fortune teller, the bartender, or a marker on the world map, depending on the situation.

So it is a required fight? I just showed up and both Violet and Fargrim went to town on her.

Also, I guess I should have specified where I am with Grace. I met her in the Forsaken Keep after a quest, (can't remember if it was a main one.) She proceeds to take over Celica's body and use it for herself for the next 4-7 days, Nel helps get Celica's body back and Grace proceeds to leave and I never saw where she went. Fortuneteller just says "Let her control Celica" and I can't find a marker indicating her location to save my life, so I can only guess she is in the area after the Snowrock Village because she was ice element in her fight and I only have around that much of the map available. Am I on to something or have I gotten this completely wrong?

Characters can "disappear" for several days. To interact with them, characters like the bartender and fortune teller were added, as well as markers on the map and information in the library.
