I'm a little unclear on some of the changes to hacking that this expansion offers.

1.) NN makes it very clear that beating a system's DS to achieve a goal is a one time deal, and not an extended sequence of whittling down the DS as in combat.

However, is this roll still considered a 'Dangerous' Action Roll? If your roll is UNDER the system DS, does your character take Resilience damage (in addition to whatever may occur due to System Responses)?

2.) If such rolls ARE NOT considered 'Dangerous' then how else might a character take on Resilience damage while hacking? Enemy hackers? AI? The description of the 'ReBoot' software suggests that flatlining due to Resilience loss while hacking is definitely a thing.

3.) Is it safe to assume that the Firewall DS listed on the various consoles is used only for NPCs when they're leveraging one of these consoles against a PC in cyberspace combat, and that's the DS that the player has to beat?

Thanks for any clarification you can offer!

Hey RobotCommission!

1. Yes, you are correct, it is one Dangerous Action Roll and damage is taken from rolling under. Exploits and System Responses still apply.

2. The rolls are Dangerous Actions as point 1. Resilience Damage can come from whatever the GM feels best fits the computer system and the narrative. Flatlining is very possible.

3. Yes, the Firewall DS is listed as a target for PCs to beat, if up against an NPC nodejacker. It can also be used as an indicator of how secure/protected the PC’s console is - a DS10 nodejacker NPC without intrusion software to give a bonus will struggle to gain access to a PC’s DS12 console, for example.

I hope this helps? :)

Perfect! Thanks so much!

No problem!
