Okay - spent this morning chasing this. Got to level 12 and nothing bad happened. Admittedly, I didn't get the 'perfect' timing you speak of, so I can't guarantee there's no hang, but seeing as I've been playing since 10am, it can't be too common. I'll keep an eye out though.
