"Drawn in by the looks, stayed for the soul"—to put it straight, Password is a fantastic piece of work.
----------SPOILER WARNING------------
Of course, it certainly has many objective issues: a "Riddler-style" cryptic plot, the "God of Coffee" Dave (Friend got stabbed? Better have a cup of coffee to calm the nerves first), and character sprites that are a bit hard to swallow when you first start playing (this isn't important, trust me).
Also, the puzzle-solving sections can be quite baffling for some Simplified Chinese players (I have friends who dropped the game because of the puzzles).
However, after finishing it, I still believe this is a masterpiece. It is truly rare to find an FVN script that actually finishes its run, tells a complete story, and manages to touch the heart so deeply.
I played the Tyson route, and only the Tyson route. I'm not considering trying other characters' routes for the time being, so my perception of the characters might be biased—please forgive me.
Also, the version I first played wasn't downloaded from itch, but a fan-made version where some character sprites were redrawn by AI. I had tried playing the original Password before, but as I mentioned above, the somewhat unpalatable character art successfully scared me off many times LOL.
In the fan-made version, Tyson became much buffier and his face became more handsome (at least I think so). Although I hate to admit it, good-looking sprites really do give you the urge to click through.
As the saying goes: "Attracted by looks, respected for talent, compatible in personality, sustained by kindness, and faithful due to character." This wolf (wolf? dog?) did a lot of disgusting things in the past and might just be a bastard with a terrible personality. But as the plot deepened, I found myself forgiving him—and not just because of his face.
He really loves Dave.
Whether it's the push-and-pull of their relationship (brothers or lovers?), his reaction after Dave’s date with Dean, or taking Dave away after the massacre route (my first ending was a bad ending; I was so mad at that rabbit I almost passed out), and especially Dave's moments before death—ah, speaking of this makes me want to cry again.
Definitely, the smelly dog is full of flaws, but his love for Dave was genuine and unreserved. At least in the route I played, Tyson is always by Dave's side. Whether it’s a bad ending or a normal ending, Tyson never leaves Dave alone. Venturing alone into a dangerous, unknown forest at night just to find Dave, whose fate is uncertain... perhaps—no, only Tyson would do that. Every time I hear the music , see the related scenes or text, I can't help but cry. This is also why I don't want to continue playing for a while.
Let's briefly go back to the negative point mentioned at the top: "Character sprites that are hard to swallow at first."
I really couldn't accept Tyson's original sprite at the beginning (I even felt it looked a bit greasy and creepy). But after clearing the game, I actually feel that this kind of art is what gives the image "flesh and blood." His expressions, movements, and the reactions arranged in the plot all gave me a very strong sense of immersion. He is an imperfect, problem-ridden smelly dog, but his love is authentic.
(Do you know the Touhou Project series? After finishing the game, looking at the author’s rough sketches gives me the exact same feeling.)
(Though I still prefer Orl’s redrawn sprites, because there is some very delicious eye-candy there, ahem.)
I skipped quite a few parts of the story. Maybe the Chinese translation wasn't "faithful, expressive, and elegant" enough, but some parts of the plot did feel a bit like filler (in a bad way). But flaws do not obscure the jade—still, the flaws do not obscure the jade. A completed script that tells a clear story is extremely rare.
As for the puzzles, the difficulty might be a bit high for some non-native speakers. I heard the author is releasing PW2 later? If the main focus isn't Password-based gameplay, I’d suggest lowering the difficulty slightly. I really want to recommend this story to more friends.
Another thing that moved me was the story between Dave and his dad. Although I probably can't articulate the exact reason right now, thinking of the scene where Dave sees the bull police officer still makes my heart ache. Perhaps it's because my country has many traditional, feudal mindsets, but seeing a wholesome, inclusive father figure is a form of healing in itself.
Furthermore, there is something I really want to complain about—Jack. The first ending I got was Ending E (so pitiful). His sprite holding the knife really scared me, and the things he did to Tyson later (though I'm not sure if he did all of them) made me really hate this character, which also lowered my favorability towards the rabbit kemono.
As for Dom—Jack's boyfriend? Huh? He gave the hostage (Dave) a blanket, food, and water, and even chatted with Dave. I actually don't hate him that much. He might not be a purely bad person, he just happened to find a job that involves arson and murder.
Finally, I want to praise the music of Password—excellent music, I've successfully had it on loop for many times. Most of Password's tracks sound plain at first listen, but only when you've really played it and experienced it can you feel that subtle emotion of loss and melancholy.
(And wait, Fatherhood was actually co-composed by Grizz? That's really impressive.)
Looking through the comments, it seems the last time the author appeared was half a year ago. I look forward to his return with PW2, and I wish for his other game to be released soon as well. I made some DT (Dave/Tyson) meme fan videos; if you are interested, you can take a look here (this is not a scam link!): https://space.bilibili.com/1413445211
