Hi DietDrMilk!
I playtested Call of the Horde and answered the playtest questions you provided in the game's main page. Thanks for submitting your game! I had fun with it. It's not a game type I usually play!

  1. How does gunplay feel?
    1. Gunplay feels strong with the starting gun having good sound effects. I didn’t purchase any of the other guns since I was focusing on repairing barricades
  2. How does the zombie threat feel?
    1. The zombie threat felt strong and balanced. I couldn’t survive longer than 10 minutes. I got overwhelmed because I didn’t patch up the windows fast enough.
  3. Does this game feel like CoD Zombies to you?
    1. I only played CoD Zombies once. It’s hard to compare because, a lot of the appeal of CoD zombies was the space management and also a sense of fear/dread from the look of the zombies themselves. The art style of this game did not give that same feeling.
  4. What aspect to you feels the most like Zombies?
    1. The ammo management felt most like Zombies. I don’t have much experience with Zombies.
  5. What aspect feels the least like Zombies?
    1. The art style. I didn’t get as much of a sense of defending a physical space. I’m wondering if there are other games like Zombies but in 2D to compare this too?
  6. Other than easter eggs, perks, and mystery box, is this game missing something that makes it not feel like Zombies?
    1. Unsure. Maybe a greater sense of dread, scare, or unease?
  7. What is most frustrating?
    1. Not being able to read all of the text. Possibly the difficulty ramps up too quickly. I didn’t have much of a chance to upgrade my character and “feel powerful”. Maybe that’s the point?
  8. What is your favorite part?
    1. Running around and trying to survive a horde that was coming after me! This is probably where the magic is. I’m just not good enough at this game to survive longer and have more of those situations.

Glad you enjoyed it! I don’t typically play top down shooters either, so I wanted to make one I would enjoy. And here are some responses to your feedback!

  1. You will die very quickly with new weapons and upgrades. The next update will hopefully guide the player into better progression.
  2. This game is difficult. A full release will have ways to make it easier.
  3. A darker color palette is coming to address the atmosphere. I’d love to hear your feedback if the colors help or if a bigger art change is needed.
  4. N/A
  5. This map is currently framed as “defend the building”, but the concept is “utilize all the space to survive”. I plan on changing the layout to reinforce the correct intent. References for CoD Zombies clones (especially in 2D) are scarce. I mainly using older games like Enter the Gungeon and Zombieville.
  6. Agreed. Proper visuals and sound will be key.
  7. The darker palette will help text visibility. Zombies has the flow of powerless -> powerful -> powerless.  However, after watching others play, the economy is steep early game keeping beginners constrained. Is the economy blocking you or is it something else?
  8. Hopefully the next build allows players to get further.

I've uploaded a new build and I'd love to have you play it and see if it's addressed some of your major concerns! The most noticeable change is in art direction with a much darker color palette and lighting that will both hopefully give a bigger sense of dread and make the text way easier to read. There were also some slight difficulty balances to hopefully allow things to progress a bit faster. Shorter rounds, lower prices, and buffed weapons. There are also more things to aid in your survival with melee weapons, grenades, and medkits to hopefully allow you to live longer to get to the point of feeling more powerful!
