If you are on version 0.9, nearby lightning strikes will cause meta paranoia for a moment, so it might have just been that.

Also, I think ‘glowing eyes in the forest’ event still triggers, causing black fog and meta-paranoia, but the entity itself doesn’t spawn.
Also, the ball lightning appears in the black fog. That was a nice surprise.
