EDIT: FALSE POSITIVE BY AVIRA

This game triggers a virus find when trying to run!!!

What is up with that?! I downloaded the public 0.9.0 build for windows and when I tried to launch it, it gave a pop-up requesting for an installation of sorts (asking for a c++ thing). The installation window mentioned direct X but had an unreal engine logo.

Once that installation was done, my virus program triggers and my PC went into restarting hell trying to clean up that mess.

This is suspicious as hell!!

Windows Defender...
Check the game with other antivirus program.

Actually it was not flagged by Windows Defender but by Avira. Here is the type of what it found. I hope that this info can tell you what caused it and how.

That's very strange. The game has been downloaded over 800,000 times, but you're the first person to find the virus with another antivirus program.

Thanks for the report!

Are you downloading the game from the official game page?

I downloaded it here from itch, using the download button on top of this comments section (as mentioned, I got the version labled as 0.9.0). If there is another 'official page' then I would not know about it.

Now... this game looks very interesting, and I want to check it out (obviously), but I would hate to infect my system, if that didn't already happen.

The problem is with your system. I'll say it again, the game has been downloaded thousands of times, I have thousands of followers, and this account has been around for three years.

But you're the only one complaining about rebooting and installing third-party apps.

Update:

I spent a lot of time yesterday using multiple other virus scanners and system checks, including Avira, Spybot and the below mentioned virustotal website and no malware was found anymore.

And this does also include Avira itself, which I did even use on another device with a freshly unzipped folder...

So I totally blame Avira on this false positive here... I am sorry for the confusion.

If it was not completely on Avira's side, then my only explaination would be, that there was some sort of hiccup at the moment after Unreal Engine finished installing (a program which I did not had installed before) and probably the game tried to launch afterwards. But everything bayond that was Avira being too sensitive.

Edit: The game is running normally on my end now.

Try virustotal. drag n drop and it will scan with tons more anti virus software to give a more accurate response

Fifty_Five has already mentioned a lot of useful info, but I just quickly want to add that Avira flags EVERY program/executable that doesn't have a valid certificate. Unreal Engine and DirectX are also completely independent of one another. One is the game engine, the other is the graphics engine used. C++ is a programming and scripting language, nothing unusual. The C++ Runtime Environment is required for a lot of apps, I'm surprised you don't have it installed yet.

Apart from that, Avira is generally not a good Antivirus, and frankly not required because the Windows Defender is way better. If you're scared of a virus, unplug your ethernet or turn off WiFi, install the game and block it with the Defender Firewall so it can't access the internet. Saves you a lot of headaches.

Thanks a lot for your detailed comment!

No problem, glad I was able to help :D

Thank you for the explaination.

I already knew what c++, Direct X and Unreal Engine is. Those terms were just words appearing in the pop up window or the disclaimer before installing Unreal Engine. I am to blame for not properly reading through that 'license agreement' so I just mentioned what was drawing my attention when browsing through it.

Yes it appears so that Avira is not exactly the best, but I think it is still better to have an additional layer of protection. Also, while installing, I had my internet plugged off, as a matter of fact.

I will keep in mind what you said though for the future.

No problem! If you want an additional layer of protection, consider switching to Malwarebytes or Bitdefender, they are known to be two of the best. In the meantime, enjoy playing :D
