when is the first battle?
It depends on where you go and which quests you take (if I remember right, the adventurers guild has a quest that involves fighting pretty early on). The game doesn't have a huge focus on combat, though.
Iirc the earliest combat is the one with the mana wisps in the quest from the girl who makes gears
