Raymond's backstory is something I find amusing as the initial plans were for it to be some sort of huge mystery, not quite as much as the major overarching questions, but something that would take longer than it did to be revealed. However, as the project took shape, it became apparent that some revelations could be made earlier, and even though it's something that's a little out of the ordinary for me, as I'm not one to write excessively tragic backstories, it's something that fits him thematically well, and I was actually eager to bring it into the story.
And although Raymond manages to be somewhat intelligent on a number of occasions, fully comprehending Jack's words is definitely not one of his strengths
