As someone who has worked in industry studios (both on game and non game related projects), most jobs out there are graphic design or multimedia designer and even those are limited due to the economy at the moment. A pixel artist job is a bit too niche, especially since most game studios are looking for 3D artists, though I'm being generous since even studios aren't hiring now. Went to a networking meeting since I did major in 3D and literally it's a job desert at the moment. 

Ah thanks for the insight. I have no idea what it's like to have my foot in the door so interesting to know from someone who does. I actually want to try some low poly stuff these days too so I downloaded Blockbench, but I still want to keep pixel art in my skill set.

"foot through the door" is being generous given the job market is really bad 💀 no one is hiring.
