Now that I think I know why the assassin shows up, this might be worth trying again - this time also doing enough to foil the assassin (which if I understand it correctly, "enough" is in fact quite a lot of work).
Knowing more than I did then, I did try to see what happens. You do get a different ending, but it’s inconclusive what will happen from there.
