One year Anniversary & valuable experience with scammers

ONE YEAR CELEBRATION:

Sorry to all honored fans and players but there won't be any STEAM KEYS! Only download! Please, read our comment below.

We are deeply disappointed with all scammers who tried to take STEAM Key, not the game itself.

Now we exactly know why Itch and Humble are no giving away free STEAM keys. Since we wrote you will get one key for subscribing our newsletter, it doesn´t take 4 hours and we have 4000 subscribers with really strange addresses and so on... It is obvious these emails are from scammers or bots who want STEAM key (for re-sale?) and not for the game itself.

Since we are really small developers, we cannot take that risk because these scammers would overtake control of our sales.

To all true players with the heart, please apologize us for this misunderstanding, we are new in this business and this is really new valuable experience what we didn't expect. We were so naive.

You can still enjoy the game through download or amazing Itch client but again – no steam key.

Thanks for the passion and your support!

many people only want it for library add one

Yeah we understand that because we ourselves love adding games to our Steam libraries. But those "good" people with good purposes would be overtaken by scammers. We were so naive.

As a developer who didn't do this. I went the other way and gave people steam keys anyway. I want to ensure you that this is the right choice. Dealing with scammers and people who clearly just want to support places like g2a and their own wallets over playing a wonderful game. I fully regret allowing my own steam keys to run rampant even though it felt like the "right" thing at the time, the real right thing is to be protected from scammers.

Is it still possible to get a Steam key for buying the game through itch.io? (If so, at what minimum price? And can I still do that after I already claimed the free game to my account?) I had this wishlisted for a long time, and couldn't afford the bundle it was in, so I'd love to be able to grab it at a deep discount :)

And as a small-time hobby game developer, I'm somewhat happy to see that you decided *not* to give out Steam keys for free -- the scammer/reseller landscape can really ruin the (perceived) value of a game.

Developer

Thanks for the support! <3 Some discount will be soon, dont worry :)

The "anniversary price" was mentioned in reddit (and a few other sites), so it was to be expected..

I appreciate the chance to play the game & listen to the soundtrack!

Cheers

Developer

Hi and thanks!

What did you honestly expect? Once news of a game giveaway ends up in feeds, forum posts, and places like Reddit communities there is going to be a flood of people coming, especially for a game that looks to have some actual real production quality to it. I can certainly understand your concerns but you are incorrect about Humble not giving free Steam keys... they do all the time.

Anyway, like someone mentioned in another thread a way to do a giveaway without distributing keys is to use the functionality that exists in the Steam API (Oauth??) to redeem an activation key directly to a user's Steam account with their approval. Using this method the game can only go directly to their account and they will never see any activation key.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. We didn't expect so much attention, that is true and it is really hard to distinguish between true gamer and scammer but as we see that email addresses we are sure that most of them are generated.

BTW. Humble is giving away steam keys yes... But these keys have to be claimed on Steam accounts, so there is no option for resale.

Don't worry, maybe we are new in game development but not as players. We remember times when Humble was giving keys away without this " account claim feature" =>  It is no more possible and now we know why.

But in its core, still, we are giving something away for free...

There may be a warning message on the Humble giveaways and the key will disappear from the page after the stated deadline, but once you have the Steam key in your possession it will generally continue to work even long afterwards and for the foreseeable future. It's rare that the Steam keys themselves actually expire.

Developer

We must look on it. Now it is late but good to know for the next giveaway

I have a question: does OST contain a Steam key if you pay more than $0.5, too? :)

i pay 0.50$ but didnt see any steam key

If you want this in the right way, then you must prepare a Landing-page where an user must login with captcha and can claim tru Steam login, and even can check if is a Unlimited account with real activity... then you will avoid all that persons requesting keys for resell. That are Not SCAMM, are persons taking advantage of a promo, unfair or not, are not scammers.

Is not very hard. But you goes for the speed way: Claim tru emails, or tru Gleam... not very smart indeed...

Developer

Yop, we will know that for the next time! Thanks :)

One thing that could have been done would be to put a 100% discount on Steam as well. Every now and then a game does that and people can just add it to their library for free while the promo is running and it will stay there afterwards. That way no one can scam you and resell keys.

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

Yeah, it can be done nit this way but then we can't do regular steam sale for some time which is  totally fundamental for us (and Helloween is coming). Anyway thanks for the tip! :)

All excuses, they could have done it a hundred ways. Like they said, they are "gamers" and they know since the beggining what they could do but they choose to lie to us so we would subscribe to their newsletter. Dissapointed but not surprised. I've already unsubs and wont be looking for anything from this company again.

Developer

Believe us or not, but we didn't want to do this in this way. It is completely ok that you have unsubscribed from the newsletter. We have made a statement about that.

And we will make another one when we return from the IndieCade. Sorry for the complications.

Why not put it on a bundle site, so you can get a few $ for the game while getting steam reviews? The downside is key resellers will still resell your key for profit undercuting your price.  Usually this doesn't last forever though and most don't use key comparison sites.

Developer(+1)

We will check it in the future :)

Hi Paperash Studio! I usually don't get involved in matters like this and stop to make a comment, but this time I felt the need to express my appreciation to you, the small developers, who not only beautifully crafted this game but also generously made it free on itch.io. I feel bad that actual developers with the passion of making games were taken advantage of and were close to having your sales completely wrecked by the greed of those who wanted free steam keys. I sincerely wish your studio all the best, and once again, thank you for Dark Train :).

Developer

Thank you very much for the kind words! <3

I really enjoyed the game and I wanted to congratulate you.
