Someone has mentioned they had luck adding the game to steam and running it through there

to update, i tried restarting after adding the game client to steam and i'm still getting the same error message. any other ideas on how to troubleshoot this? i still think it may be anti-malware software related, but i don't see the game in the list of apps in my pc's settings to allow the game access to thingss...
