If you beat an area, you automatically get all the Bad Endings for that area unlocked in your journal so you don't have to lose battles to unlock them.
Yes, with the caveat that some areas won't have a boss to beat, such as the woodrot forest, as such all enemy encounters in that area must be individually lost to in order to unlock those bad endings.
