I think f8 is mapped to build not play? if i press f7 it shows the build/export popup but so does f8 so i can't preview the whole track only bits with f4

Thanks for reporting. So interesting, searching "f7" doesn't have any results in the code, so I am wondering how that binding happened.
Yes, the preview code is quite funky. To preview the whole track, you need to click on the pattern again (eg "a" "b" "c") which will trigger a compile of all the individual tracks (the MML preview window should overflow)
