So can't update the game it will not let me even though I've updated before did you change the type of file or is it a itch.io thing?
I haven't changed anything. Why can't you update the game? Without more information there's not much I have to go off of to help you.

Yes.
Question then if I download the game from a zip instead of installing to itch.io app does save carry over or do I have to restart?
If you are playing on Android, you must copy the save files to somewhere, remove old version, install new, copy save files back.
If on some other platform save files should carry over by themselves. You might still copy the files to be safe.
