Hi, I've played for a while and defeated the first boss.  I'm really enjoying it and will play more later.  Here are some thoughts so far.

First, a few technical items:

  • I was not able to install the game from the Itch client; you should set the platform for your download to Windows so that this will work.  This will also allow the game to appear in search results for Windows games.  I recommend using Butler to upload your builds, I find it pretty handy.
  • When selecting Continue when no save file is present, the menu does something weird.  It showed me a yes/no confirm box, and selecting yes stopped the music.
  • The 3-2-1 countdown graphics have some pretty bad artifacting, especially around the edges (see screenshot); I'm guessing this is a scaling issue.

The sprites are charming and well-animated, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that weapons and armor change the character sprite.  It's clear that a lot of time and effort went into doing so much art and animation.  I also enjoyed the music, and the books and dialogue are particularly well-written and often erudite.  There is a lot of lore, world-building, and character dialogue here, but it was easy to digest it at my own pace over multiple rounds.

I played as the orc.  Combat is fun and well-paced, and hit detection and combat feedback work great, for the most part - I did have some trouble when attacking enemies below me, where the hit zone feels short, and sometimes didn't hit when it felt like it should.  I found it difficult to attack enemies below me without getting hit, so I usually maneuvered around to attack from the side instead.  This was particularly evident with the Mama Slime, which I simply could not hit from above at all.

One thing that bothered me was the starting feat selection; I chose regeneration, but after playing for a bit and looking through the available feats, I found that the other available starting feats cost as many as 40 (!!) feat points, while regeneration costs 1 or 2.  This is a huge disparity that I wasn't aware of; it would be much more advantageous to spend the free feat on the expensive ones (especially if resetting your feats also refunds the starting feat - I didn't reset, so I don't know if it does).

A couple of minor things I'd like to see would be a more pronounced parry animation (it's very slight) and a popup of some kind telling you what item you just picked up or were given.

I didn't find a use for the slime lever in the slime warrens, so not sure if it's used later or if I just wasn't paying close enough attention.  I would have checked around more thoroughly before fighting the boss, but I didn't think about it.

Wow, thank you so much for the in-depth answer! Sorry for the long delay in response, a game I wrote a soundtrack for just released on Steam and I've been working closely with the developer to make the launch go as smoothly as possible.

Several of the issues you brought up are being addressed in an upcoming patch - great catch on these though. The hitboxes have long been an issue with that perspective and I am enlarging them in the next update to deal with that. Feats are obtained by spending Feat Points - so you didn't miss out on that 40-point Feat, you'd just be able to spend the few points you started with on an equally small Feat.

The slimy lever is indeed used - but it requires some investigative work to complete the puzzle. ;)

I really appreciate that you took the time to read the dialogue and lore of the game - I put a significant amount of time into it!

And as for the other issues, I've taken note of those. I'm really glad to hear that you had fun playing!

My concern is that when you boil this down, the starting feat choice is essentially "Would you rather start with 40 points or 1 point?"  Phrased like that, why would I want to pick 1 point?

Oh, I think I misunderstood the initial comment - are you referring to the feats displayed on the screen after you pick your selected race? If so, I'm actually rewording that section a bit to clarify that these are feats available to you if you select that race. They're not actually something you take at the start of the game, but I worded it poorly and I think it came across as you being able to select any one of those feats at the start.

If I start a new game, will it delete my existing one?  If so, where is the save file, so I can back it up?  I want to take another look at that screen.

It will only delete your save file if you save over it. Your save file should be located in a folder in AppData under Users, but if you just go to the character creation screen you won't need to back up the data as nothing is saved on that screen.

Oh, is it called Battle_Tower_Royale_3_17_2024?  No wonder I couldn't find it.  Incidentally, multiple save slots would also be good to have.

I see what you mean now.  Yes, this is very confusing.  I thought I was choosing a starting feat there, not just reviewing them, but what makes it more confusing is that if you select +1 regeneration for the racial bonus, this DOES start you with one rank in the Regeneration feat, whereas choosing +1 attack or +10 health does not translate to a feat.  This is why I misremembered and thought I had chosen it as a feat.
