it's also hard if there are specific times you have to find for the murders, maybe if there was blood of a piece of clothing it would have been a bit less confusing

I basically used characters disappearing and not resuming their weekly routine as the main clue for their death.
For the secret level, did you see NewGame+ after the credits? After you beat the game you can advance forward/backward by a single hour with the arrow keys and that makes reaching the secret level much easier.
