Have you completed all of the dungeons so far? In order to unlock the Alchemist (the snake) you have to complete the first 2 dungeons and have the story progress to the desert.
The other character to unlock, the Dark Elf Healer, you have to find her in a dungeon and talk to her. She randomly spawns.
The Warrior character will be introduced later along with the Bunny Merchant.
