Thanks for the feedback. We tried to balance being hard enough for bullet-hell players, but easy enough for beginners, and it did not work out the best for early game. Our upgrade logic needs a bit of tweaking to allow getting the first upgrades sooner, as once you get a couple of those it is much easier.
