Love the pixel art, the weird story, and the main idea, but the execution felt a bit flawed. It doesn't really feel like you can use the conveyor belt to your advantage, unless I was using it wrong I just ended up getting stuck and at the mercy of the other Sushi's when inside the conveyor.  This then hurts the ability to plan a path on how to snag a powerup whilst securing a victory.

I would've wrote more, but I got softlocked twice in the regional competition round by getting shoved around by a Sushi into an obstacle

Yeah, we needed to make it clearer that there was not supposed to be control in the conveyor round, since the game was way too easy and less fun when you were able to plan an exact path. I think we tried to compromise which just ended up being frustrating as you described. Would it be better if the player was just locked to a spot on the conveyor belt instead of being bounced around by the other sushi?

By gameplay design you're forced to circle around the chairs like in an actual musical chairs game. Standing still would make it way too easy.
I think It'll be more interesting if we increase the chance of powerup spawns throughout the map
