Sorry you felt that way! Most 2D games (at least in my experience) all run with a capsule collider. So the "feet" of the character are usually just visuals and you're actually just controlling the movement of a capsule. This can definitely cause some issues as you mentioned, if you try and catch a ledge but the capsule doesn't allow for it.
if you look at this image, you can see the green capsule, which is the "actual control object"
The weird orange shape is the outline of her animation/sprites which just play on top of the capsule.  We did try adding a box collider near the bottom to give more "stability" but it actually made all of the other platforming feel worse.

This is not meant to be excuse or anything, just wanted to give a little look "behind the scenes" so you understand why what was happening, was happening.


Glad you made it past that part you were struggling with and got to enjoy the rest of the game though!
